Who is Southern Wind Lion Dance?

Southern Wind Lion Dance Performers

Meet Southern Wind Lion Dance

Troupe Coordinator: Devonté Cunningham

Known as the premier Lion Dance (and percussion) troupe in Southern California for performance, as well as cultural and community representation. Their foundation is all about the balance and harmony of life. Part of their mission is to mentor and educate future generations in culture, martial arts, and the art of living. They are non-profit, founded originally by a University of California, Irvine student.

Each Lion is danced by 2 people in costume. Each Lion is handmade from bent rattan or bamboo and crafted from paper and has the ability to emote through blinking eyes and other theatrical movements. The head weighs 11 pounds. And the tail is the support, as the head does lift stunts — 2 people high! Traditionally, these dances are performed to driving live percussion.

And don’t miss their 2019 Rose Parade performance:
This close community of diverse multi-ethnic members will be performing alongside Harmony Through Union for the length of the parade, the Chinese American Heritage Foundation's 2019 Rose Parade float entry. Their performance is dynamic, colorful, and highly athletic, a little dangerous — but very representative of the culture and the form.
